How Decisions Are Made

One of the requirements for the student fee money collected from CPE majors is that its allocation is to be directed by the Computer Engineering Student Fee Committee. The votes of the student members of this committee determine how the money will be spent each year -- as long as the money is spent for instructional purposes, is legal, and does not violate any University policies.

Of course, the committee members seek the advice of their peers and the committee's advisors in formulating their proposals. The committee also follows general guidelines for conducting their task as follows:

  1. The committee openly requests input from CPE majors in advance of its deliberations.
  2. The CPE program separately maintains all revenues and expenditures associated with the academic fee.
  3. Each Spring quarter the committee presents to the CPE majors the results of the current year's spending and revenues and conducts an election of the next year's committee.
  4. Each Spring quarter the next year's committee holds at least one meeting with interested students and further meetings as necessary to estimate expected revenues and plan expenditures for the following year.
  5. In the Fall quarter the committee reports to the CPE majors on both the state and academic fee budgets, specifically relating the impact of the fee expenditures on the academic program.

Specifically, during the Spring, after hearing suggestions from students, faculty and advisors, the Committee forms a draft proposal for expenditures. The Committee then seeks further review by the faculty advisors to the Committee, and the CENG Dean. A final proposal is submitted to the Dean and the Provost. It is formally accepted by the President in July.

How Your Money was Spent during the 2006-07 Academic Year:

This is intended to keep you up-to-date on how your student fees are allocated, and how you can influence what the money will be spent on next year.

The CPE fee committee compiled student feedback and approved budget expenditures to benefit all CPE students. The allocations were as follows:

For a more detailed accounting of the actual expenditures, please visit the CPE portion of the web-based College of Engineering Fee Initiative Reporting System.

How You Can Influence Student Fee Allocations:

If you have thoughts, ideas or comments, the committee wants to hear them! Please submit any and all suggestions by e-mail to Matthew Schlachtman, or contact the CPE Program Office.
